Ways to Reuse Your Christmas Tree in Your Landscaping

Ways to Reuse Your Christmas Tree in Your Landscaping

If you went with a live Christmas tree this year, you may be wondering what to do with it after the holiday season. For those of you who want to reuse it instead of just recycling it or throwing it away, we are here to tell you that you can actually use it in your gardening!

Here are our top options for reusing your Christmas tree in your landscaping.

Compost It

The first option on our list is to consider composting your tree.

Since the tree’s needles are tough and have an almost rubbery consistency, they will take longer than other natural items to break down. Shredding or cutting up the tree will help this process quite a bit, otherwise, it could take years to break down.

Doing this is a great way to reuse your tree and benefit your compost pile at the same time.

Use it as Mulch

Another great way to reuse your Christmas tree is to use it as mulch.

These trees actually make a great mulch for the base of your shrubs and/or trees. It saves you money and allows you to reuse something you already own.

To do this, you will need a shredder and safety equipment (safety glasses and gloves). For the best results, remove the branches from the trunk and then put them individually into the shredder. Typically, the trunk of your Christmas tree will be too thick for the shredder, so you will have to either use it for firewood or one of the other options on our list.

Replant the Tree

You can also consider replanting your Christmas tree in your landscaping if it still has its roots attached. These trees are typically very resilient and can handle the replanting process with very few issues.

Depending on your wants and needs, you could even cover the tree in feeders or food for birds and other creatures, or you could even decorate it.
